Enrollment and Degree Verification

If you are looking for proof that you are registered at, or earned a degree from UB, official enrollment and degree verification is available in two ways.

Enrollment Verification

An enrollment verification is an official document that can be used whenever verification of student enrollment status is required for scholarship purposes, medical coverage, jury duty, car insurance, etc. It does not include individual course or grade information and does not provide GPA.

Enrollment verification through the National Student Clearinghouse includes term start date, term end date, enrollment status (full-time, half-time, less than half-time), expected graduation date, status effective date, and the date certified by UB for current and historical enrollment.

Please note, "Resign" (R) grades do not count towards a student’s academic load when reporting to the National Student Clearinghouse. If a student resigns coursework, and these resigns change the student’s academic load (ex: from full-time to part-time), the lesser academic load will be reported to the National Student Clearinghouse in subsequent reporting.

Organizations (such as health insurance companies and prospective employers) can request enrollment verification directly from the National Student Clearinghouse. Select the “Verify Current Enrollment” option in the middle of the page after logging on to the site. A fee of $2.50 is charged by the Clearinghouse for this service.

Students who have been at UB spring 2011 and later can generate an Enrollment Verification Certificate via the National Student Clearinghouse. To do so, log on to your HUB Student Center (via MyUB), within the Academics section, select Enrollment Verification (within the “other academic” drop down menu). Follow the link to the National Student Clearinghouse Student Self-Service site.

Parents and former students may generate and print an Enrollment Verification Certificate online. Select the “Verify Current Enrollment” option in the middle of the page after logging on to the site. A fee of $2.50 is charged by the Clearinghouse for this service.

Current and former students can also obtain proof of enrollment by requesting an official transcript. Transcripts should also be used if the organization is requesting additional information, such as GPA.

If the organization requesting verification has its own form, students or parents should complete the portion of the form with their information and then attach the Enrollment Verification Certificate from the Clearinghouse or an official transcript. The University at Buffalo does not complete such forms.

Loan Deferment

Enrollment Verification Certificates should not be used for deferment purposes. Most lenders and loan servicing organizations that participate in the National Student Clearinghouse also participate in our paperless deferment process. With this process, no paper forms need to be completed by either students or schools. Students must simply call their servicer to request deferment. The servicer then posts a deferment to the student’s account after the student’s verbal order is confirmed with the National Student Clearinghouse.

Degree Verification

If you owe money to the university (such as an outstanding balance on your student accounts, Parking & Transportation fees, library fines or breakage fees) degree information cannot be released. Students who enrolled at UB since spring 2011 or later can view and pay their balance on their HUB Student Center (via MyUB).

Current and former students can obtain proof of degree or additional degree-related information (such as GPA) by requesting an official transcript.

If the organization requesting verification has its own form, students or parents should complete the portion of the form with their information and then attach an official transcript or indicate that degree verification is available through the National Student Clearinghouse.

Organizations (such as health insurance companies and prospective employers) can request degree verification directly from the National Student Clearinghouse Verification Services. A fee of $15.00 is charged by the Clearinghouse for this service. Be sure to select the correct school:

The School of Medicine does not participate in the Clearinghouse. If you wish to verify an MD degree, contact the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences registrar’s office for certification services.

Your Student Privacy Rights (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act – FERPA)

Information about you may be released only according to the information release decision you provided the university. If you have requested for the University at Buffalo not to release your directory information, enrollment and degree verification cannot be provided. If you have already requested non-release, you will need to submit a Request for Directory and Information Release/Non-Release (PDF) in order to permit enrollment or degree verification.

How often is the NSC data updated?

The University at Buffalo sends student enrollment and degree information to the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) on a monthly basis, with more frequent transmission around degree conferral periods (February 1, June 1, and September 1) and at the conclusion of the drop/add period. The schedule of transmissions is available at the National Student Clearinghouse site.

If you recently made changes to your enrollment and would like an enrollment verification that reflects these changes, please allow time for the NSC information to be updated.

Reporting Resign (R) Grades to the National Student Clearinghouse

Beginning fall 2014, courses in which a student resigns will not be counted towards his or her academic load. This means that students who resign coursework after the drop/add deadline will be reported as having a lesser enrollment status to the National Student Clearinghouse if the resign(s) change the student’s academic load (ex: from full time to part time). This accurate reporting of a change in status may have implications for financial aid and lending.

Please be sure to meet with your academic advisor and/or speak with a financial aid advisor before dropping or resigning any coursework to make sure you understand the academic and financial implications of doing so.

Disciplinary Records

Requests for disciplinary records should be sent to the Office of Judicial Affairs at ub-judicial@buffalo.edu.
